My first Sculpt and Stretch Class
My normal ballet barre class was cancelled today so I had the chance to take a casual class this morning at the pole studio. It was a combined Sculpt and Stretch class.
There were five ladies and our gorgeous instructor Karla.
The first part of the session was conditioning. Karla smiles when she lets us know we will be doing a 5. 4. 3. 2. 1 program... well, it's lethal but specific. I did bear crawls, bootee squats, crossover curtsies, pull up lifts on the pole and the good old star jumps amongst other stuff I must have blocked from my memory because I had to go to my happy place while doing them.
It was an intense session but it really worked, really targeted the areas we need to build up to be able to do more complicated tricks later down the track. I do confess to wanting to swear and pout, Karla manages to look great doing the most strenuous activities. So focus became the goal; do it, get through it. I know I'll need to keep going to that most simplistic place to get through this conditioning, probably for quite a while yet. But I also know there will come a day when it will become easier, and one day I'll have someone looking at me wondering how the hell I do it and make it look easy.
Anyway, after realising I need to run more and work on my cardio outside of dancing, the conditioning part ended and we moved on to the stretching session. PNF stretching is Karla's 'thing' and a way to maximise your flexibility gains in the quickest amount of time. I have not done it before and just with todays session I got outstanding results.
I've been not far from a full split for a few months now, after the partnered PNF stretching we did I got into my first full flat left leg split, and it was comfortable to sit in it. Which was handy as Karla rushed off to grab the camera to capture my moment.
I know, got to work on my posture but was just sitting there enjoying the feel of the foam mat on the back of my left leg. I had no problems sitting upright better before the pic, just slouching while enjoying the moment. I'll concentrate better when I finally do my right leg split and get a photo of that.
I did say to Karla that it's not really real until it's been performed and witnessed three times. Her reply, "Well, that's one out of the way".
So I have had an incredibly amazing and very unexpected result with pole dancing and only in the second week of doing it. Wow, what other amazing things will happen as Poling and I get to know each other better?
